What is the Advantage Bad Guys Have That You Will Never Have?
What is the one essential and consistent element of a non-domestic criminal attack that is never discussed or practiced in most martial arts self-defense schools including mine?
The Advantage Is..
From street thugs, school shooters, kidnappers, terrorists, bullies and most all other non-domestic violent attacks occur when the attacker chooses. They choose the time, the place, and the method of attack.
“Play Along” Pseudo Self-Defense:
Contrast that with a typical martial arts class where everyone partners off and practices escaping a headlock. You know the time the headlock is coming, you are in the place and the instructor has told everyone the method of attack. And, by the way, don’t do it too hard because you don’t want to hurt or discourage your partner.
In today’s world people do not want one-step sparring and the “play along pseudo self-defense” that I was raised on.
A Record Number of Shooting Deaths Already This Year:
Before we dive into that, you may have heard that the number of police officers shot and killed in the line of duty so far this year is up 40 percent, putting 2011 on pace to be the deadliest year for officers in decades. 11 officers were shot in one 24-hour period last week including two in the Tampa Bay area. Combine that with statistics all over the country and the shootings of officers here in the Denver area and you can see that trouble is brewing.
Chivalry is Dead: Combine that with the brutal killings in Tucson and the viral story / video of a group attacking a man in the D.C. Metro and people are becoming afraid. The need for reality, law enforcement, military, and corrections type of training has never been more in demand. Not only are people afraid but they know that anyone nearby is more apt to videotape the attack than help them stop it. Chivalry is dead.
